Warrnambool City Council is working hard to address the issue of affordable housing, according to mayor Richard Ziegeler.
"Council is concerned about housing affordability, which has become an issue affecting many capital and regional cities across Australia," Cr Ziegeler said.
"Council is focused on the factors over which we can have some influence. Many factors are market driven."
Cr Ziegeler said the council had undertaken significant planning work over the past decade to ensure there is an adequate supply of land available for residential and commercial development.
"The most recent land supply report showed that Warrnambool has about a 20 year supply of residential land," he said.
Cr Ziegeler said the council was also working with a number of other councils to address the growing housing needs.
"In response to housing demand, Warrnambool City Council is also partnering with surrounding municipalities across the region to develop a Key Worker Housing Action Plan," he said.
"This regional initiative brings together local government, state government and other key stakeholders in housing delivery with a common goal of addressing key worker housing needs," Cr Ziegeler said.
"This project will explore key worker housing opportunity sites, models and options for investment, infrastructure and land use planning enablers and partnerships to enable implementation."
Cr Ziegeler said the council also worked hard to process planning applications as quickly as possible to allow people to build new homes in a timely manner.
"We also have one of the most efficient planning departments in Victoria," he said.
