Emmanuel College head of English Catherine Ryan said the year 12 teachers and students were happy with the exam paper.
"The questions were really open and accessible and I do think that they've factored in what the kids have been through in the past couple of years which is really good," Ms Ryan said.
The students completed three sections in the three-hour exam.
In Section A, students wrote about texts The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville and the Alfred Hitchcock film Rear Window, while in Section B they compared Australian Indigenous play The 7 Stages of Grieving with the novel The Longest Memory by Fred D'Aguiar. In section C they analysed a "straightforward" article with "nothing to throw them off".
She said some students had felt unprepared due to lockdowns and remote learning.
"It's been hard for them to keep the momentum going at home. The last couple of weeks there's been quite a few anxious, panicked kids feeling they're not as prepared as they should be."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Warrnambool's Daniel Mahony, 18, said while he felt prepared going into the exam, there were moments where he lost his momentum but overall he was happy with how he went.
"Both section A and B were what I predicted they would be on so that helps. That worked out. "
He said despite the year's challenges he was "generally able to keep a level of optimism". He's got a week until his next exam, maths methods.
Nicola Giblin, 17, said she felt relieved. "It was a big exam and it's nice for it to be done and out of the way," Nicola said.
She said she wrote about topics that she'd revised but hadn't covered in any practice exams.
"I thought 'I'll give it a go' and I think it paid off because I was pretty confident with what I was writing which is good."
She said her exams were spread over three weeks. "My next exam isn't for another week which is really nice, because a lot of my friends, their schedules are jam packed. I've got a nice little break."
She'll have maths methods and textiles next week, followed by studio art and literature exams in a fortnight.
