Media officer Susie Holcombe said the league was prepared for the announcement.
"We had a meeting last Wednesday evening with the club presidents and league executive," she said.
"It was decided if nothing had changed by 5pm on Sunday after the roadmap's release, the finals would be cancelled.
"All club presidents agreed with that.
"We tried to hold off as long as we could."
Holcombe said it was a tough way to end the season.
"The clubs, the players, the supporters, the sponsors and everyone have put so much into the 2021 season and to not get a result and not get the opportunity to play finals is disappointing and even the league executive is disappointed for the clubs as well for the amount everyone has put in," she said.
She thanked everyone involved for their patience and said the league was excited for 2022.
Holcombe said it was great to see clubs already making coaching appointments in preparation for next year.
The league acknowledged its minor premiers - Dartmoor in the senior football and Westerns in A grade netball.
SWDFNL held its best and fairest presentations online about three weeks ago.
