"They have been great. Their patience has allowed us not to hurry the process with Corner Pocket. He's now won six in a row which is no mean feat.
"We scratched Corner Pocket at Sandown a couple of weeks ago because of a heavy track and the owners were very supportive with the decision. I don't think we've got to the bottom of him just yet."
The multiple group one-winning trainer said Corner Pocket showed no signs of training off.
"Corner Pocket is a real tradesman," Smith said.
"He doesn't overdo it on the training track. We'll see how he pulls up after Saturday's run but I think we may give him another run. We'll just wait and see.
"I've got to give credit to Declan. It was a top ride. Declan has a great understanding of Corner Pocket."
Bates said Corner Pocket found plenty when needed at vital stages of the race.
"Corner Pocket is obviously a good horse," Bates said.
"He absorbed pressure and still kicked when I asked him to. I thought it was a very good performance."
From his eights starts, Corner Pocket has won more then $180,000 in stake-money for his connections.
