The Lions scored their first win of the Warrnambool and District league season after defeating Russells Creek 20.16 (136) to 8.10 (58) at Walter Oval on Saturday.
Matheson saw his Lions' commitment to training shine through when they were tested early by Creek.
"Their ball movement in the first 15 minutes worried us as we were a bit loose and unaccountable and they were hitting targets by foot then we became more accountable and tightened up the defence," he said.

"We have been training hard on ball movement and being clean and around the 15-minute mark of the first term we started to get that clean ball movement."
Matheson said his side's focus on its plans helped get it back into the contest and to run away with the game after quarter-time.
Alex White (five goals) and Sandy Williams (four) led the way through the midfield. The pair was named the Lions' best players in the 78-point victory.
The Lions now turn their attention to round three against an injury-ravaged Allansford next Saturday.

Russells Creek coach Peter Timms said his side would look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat against an undefeated Kolora-Noorat next weekend.
"We will review every aspect of game," he said. "Our decision making was off and we didn't play the game-plan we have been training on.
"Rovers were good at making us change our mind in our decision making and they spread well from the contest.
"This week we are going to focus on going back to basics. We were learning and getting back to our run and carry, which we didn't do on the weekend."
