Englishman Paul Casey heads into the second day of the tournament leading at seven-under the card.
Leishman nailed a brilliant approach to the par-5 13th from the pine straw to set up an eagle putt from three metres that he duly buried.
The father-of-three's round also nailed two birdies on the par-3 fourth and par-5 15th across his opening round. He also had two bogeys on the par-4 10th and par-4 17th.
"I could have shot a really low score today so it's a little frustrating to miss some chances but, given where I've been leading in to the tournament, I'll take the 70 and move on," Leishman said.
"Hopefully I can keep hitting it this well. It might have been one of my all-time ball striking days. And if I make putts to go with it, then I might have a chance."
Leishman tees off at 11:21pm (AEST) on Friday night.
