League president Kylie Murphy sent a letter to all clubs on Saturday asking them to evaluate the viability of a 2020 season.
In the letter, which was forwarded to The Standard, Murphy asks clubs to consider the league's financial rebuild in 2019, the possibility of cancelling and two nine-game season options.
"The consequences of starting season 2020 at this late stage would realistically mean we financially regress. Potentially we are back in the red," Murphy said.
"As the governing body of the league with an obligation to act in the best interests of all clubs with a view to the longevity of the league we must make financially responsible decisions.

"If we cancel season 2020 and use our time to prepare wisely for season 2021, including pre-season competitions, early exposure for sponsors and effective financial management.
"There is no reason why season 2021 cannot build on the good management of season 2019 to ensure longevity."
The nine-game season options have four weeks of contact training prior and a four-week finals series.
Option one starts on June 27 and ends with the grand final on October 17. Option two starts and finishes a week earlier.
Allansford, Kolora-Noorat, Nirranda, Russells Creek and South Rovers would get four home games while Dennington, Merrivale, Old Collegians, Panmure and Timboon Demons get five.
