Inn Keeper failed to reel in Tavisan over the concluding stages in the 1100-metre contest.
Trainer Symon Wilde was delighted with the performance of the six-year-old.
"Inn Keeper is just so game," Wilde said. "His run was excellent. I thought for a few strides he may have got to Tavisan just before the finish line but that never happened.
"I think if the track had been a bit wetter it would have helped our chances. He seems to find an extra leg on heavy tracks.
"He's been a wonderful money spinner for his connections."
Wilde told The Standard Inn Keeper may have his next start in the Golden Topaz Stakes at Swan Hill next Sunday or he could run at Moonee Valley on June 13.
"We'll just take him home and see he pulls up before making any decision," he said.
"Inn Keeper usually pulls up well after his races but we'll just wait and see."

From his 26 starts Inn Keeper has won seven races, earning more then $319,000 in stakemoney for his connections.
Meanwhile, promising filly Broadwayandfourth registered her third win for former Crossley trainer Mitch Freedman when she won a benchmark 78 at Caulfield.
Freedman, who now trains at Ballarat, said Broadwayandfourth has taken time to get to her top in this campaign.
"It's good to see her back in the winner's circle," he said. "Broadwayandfourth has a lot of ability.
"She's taken a bit of time to get her fit this time in - she's a bit grosser than she was last time. She's going to be a horse that'll be a fringe player in mares grade, I would have thought in the future."
Broadwayandfourth took her stake earnings to more then $285,000 with the win.
