GERARD FitzGerald says a former VFL footballer showing a desire to get better in the twilight of his career is Hamilton Kangaroos' ideal recruit.

The first-year mentor said Jon Coghlan, a former Bendigo VFL prospect, was a welcome inclusion at Melville Oval.
"His family have bought a property in the region and he is a quality person and player," FitzGerald said.
He's towards the end of his career but he's not at the end of learning and development.

"He fits our recruiting philosophy. He wants to play a good level of football, which the Hampden league is, and come into a good environment."
FitzGerald said Coghlan's attitude had impressed club insiders.
"He wants to keep developing as a player. He's towards the end of his career but he's not at the end of learning and development," he said.
FitzGerald said his players were due back for pre-season training on Monday.

"There's an emphasis on conditioning and hopefully the players can see where they fit into the structures we'll play."
