But it's a young Saint who the mentor believes can significantly help his side in its quest for a sixth straight Hampden league premiership.
That player is bottom-aged under 18s player Clem Nagorcka, who returns to the Saints' side alongside the experienced Ben Dobson for its final round match against Terang Mortlake.
"He has played a few games this year and has been really impressive," McLaren said of the 17-year-old, who is also a Greater Western Victoria Rebels-listed player.
"He could be a wildcard in finals. On a dry deck he has looked dangerous.
"As a bottom-ager it's a big ask to be playing at senior level but now we are starting to get on top of the grounds we think he adds something to our side. He is elusive and we hope he can come in and play well."
McLaren opted to rest experienced midfielders James Gow (ankle) and Liam Hoy (corked thigh/hip) ahead of another finals series.
Gow was ruled out on Wednesday after recieving a positive diagnosis. McLaren erred on the side of caution with Hoy, who suffered the injury last weekend, at selection on Thursday night.
