Detective Senior Constable Roger McClure, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said the break-in was committed at a Laidlaw Street home between 2pm on Tuesday and 3.30pm Wednesday.
He said the residents were in Melbourne for a hospital appointment with a child.
Detective Senior Constable McClure said police were particularly keen to obtain information from members of the public or CCTV footage of that area.
"The house was broken into. A HP laptop computer and money tin containing coins was stolen," he said.
"The residents were not at home due to a medical appointment in Melbourne with a child.
"It was an opportunistic theft and probably committed by someone who knew they were away."
The investigator said crime scene officers would attend at the property today and carry out an examination of the home.
Anyone with information or who has CCTV of that area is requested to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hamilton police have also received a report of another home invasion at a Hensley Park Road home, which was also targeted last week.
"The offender has allegedly entered the property, got into a back room and opened draws but taken nothing," Detective Senior Constable McClure said.
"That was overnight Wednesday."
The detective said a string of burglaries and aggravated burglaries had been committed in that area during the past couple of weeks.
