Detective Senior Constable Jarrod Anderson, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said two home invasions were committed between 1am and 4am on Tuesday.
"We received a couple of reports that offenders had entered houses in the Milton Street area while occupants were at home," he said.
"In one house a resident was confronted by an intruder, who immediately fled from the property.
"The residents of the other home were not aware there had been a break-in until much later in the morning."
Detective Senior Constable Anderson said purses were stolen from one house but nothing from the other after the encounter.
"The victim of the confrontation was left scared and shaken," he said.
"Anytone with information is requested to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
