SECURITY camera footage has emerged of a man being assaulted in a Warrnambool pub because of his sexuality.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose labelled the incident a step back to the “dark ages”.
Luke Chapman, 27, of Lake View Road, Koroit, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court this week to unlawful assault.
The court heard Chapman was a drunk hotel patron who questioned another man's sexuality before assaulting him. He was fined $2000.
The magistrate said Chapman's behaviour had been demeaning and it was none of his business if the victim was gay.
Police said that at 9.30pm on January 14 Chapman was at Warrnambool's Seanchai hotel when he went to the pool table area, put his phone on the pool table and questioned the victim's sexuality before making disgusting comments.
The victim threw a drink, some of which splashed onto Chapman's shirt.
Chapman then punched the victim to the left side of the head before being escorted out of the hotel.
