Luke Chapman, 27, of Lake View Road, Koroit, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to unlawful assault.
The court heard Chapman was a drunk hotel patron who questioned another man's sexuality before assaulting him. He was fined $2000.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Chapman's behaviour had been demeaning and it was none of his business if the victim was gay.
"It's like going back to the dark ages," she said.
The magistrate said that Chapman's excuse that he was stupidly drunk seemed an accurate assessment of the situation.
She said despite Chapman's prior appearances in another court, a not conviction fine was appropriate.
"You behaved in a stupid and inappropriate way. You were lucky to have kept your job," Ms Toose said.
Police said that at 9.30pm on January 14 Chapman was at Warrnambool's Seanchai hotel when he went to the pool table area, put his phone on the pool table and questioned the victim's sexuality before making disgusting comments.
The victim threw a drink, some of which splashed onto Chapman's shirt.
Chapman then punched the victim to the left side of the head before being escorted out of the hotel.
Defence counsel Alex McCulloch told the court his client had been at the Camperdown races with a friend that day and consumed 15 cans of double strength alcohol, the equivalent of 30 standard drinks.
He said Chapman was deeply ashamed, embarrassed and disappointed.
Mr McCulloch said Chapman had no problems with gay people, some of his girlfriend's friends were gay, who were also his friends.
"He has difficulty explaining what he did. He has no memory of the offending," Mr McCulloch said.
In a separate case, a father of four with a history of violent offending who pushed around his wife, has to do 100 hours of community work.
Mathew Benjamin Wytkamp, 38, of Morriss Road, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage and unlawful assault.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Wytkamp had history including aggravated burglary with a firearm.
