The greyhound is the newest addition to the charity's team and the namesake is set to raise the profile of the Peter's Project cause everytime it hits the track to race.

The idea to name the dog in honour of Peter's Project came from the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club.

"It's a great opportunity for the greyhound club to become involved in a very worthy community project," club president Phillip Mitchem said.

Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club general manager Matt Ansell said he hoped the namesake would boost awareness of the project's aim of establishing an integrated cancer care centre in the south-west.

"From the promotional aspect, it's a great thing to have the dog racing in that name," he said.

"It gets the the message out about Peter's Project to a different group of people."

The club will donate $500 to Peter's Project every time the dog wins, but the campaign's founder Vicki Jellie said raising the profile of the project across the state was priceless.

"We are very happy, we think this is wonderful and we are very grateful," Mrs Jellie said.

"It's through the community doing things like this we're going to get where we need to go."

"It's not about winning, it's about the promotion the dog is going to bring."

Owner Philip Lenehan has high hopes for the two-year-old's racing future with its brother already making the Warrnambool Cup final in May and its sister a reserve in the group one laurel at Sandown.

It's expected the dog will be racing within a fortnight and will compete weekly at city and country meets.

Peter's Project is named in honour of Warrnambool businessman Peter Jellie who died aged 49 after losing a 20-week battle with cancer in 2008.

The campaign aims to establish a $30 million centralised cancer treatment centre in the south-west along with other supporting infrastructure including radiotherapy services and a magnetic imaging machine.
