WHEN former Carlton defender John Goold helped the Blues snatch an amazing come-from-behind victory over Collingwood in the 1970 VFL grand final it must have instilled a deep sense of determination. Now almost four decades later he is enjoying another success that came through beating the odds. The Camperdown farmer, huntsman and polo enthusiast has developed a health food for dogs and cats claimed to boost immunity and skin diseases. He hit upon the product almost by chance after helping solve a health problem in bull calves for Midfield Meat abattoir owner Colin McKenna of Warrnambool about five years ago. They realised that bull calves weaned soon after birth lacked the natural anti-bodies from colostrum in their mothers' milk. His healthy calves would pick up fatal illnesses when yarded with calves from other farms. So Mr Goold sought help from the CSIRO and developed a supplement which was fed to calves and sent to universities in the US and Australia for scientific trials. In the process he tried it with his hounds and was impressed with how it improved their health and neutralised the urine potency on grass."We made a unique breakthrough and now have a product with major international interest," he told The Standard."A mixture of probiotics and prebiotics-drenched saline was fed to calves to activate their gut and elevate their immunity."It did the same with dogs. The results were amazing in improved health and fertility."It's taken $3 million on research and development to get his Yoghurt Plus product for cats and dogs to a stage where it is sold in Coles and IGA supermarkets. The product is made from Australia meat meal mixed with overseas-sourced lactose-free yoghurt, enzymes and bacteria to enhance the digestive tract."It's blended in Melbourne to my special recipe. This is breakthrough science." He also hopes to soon sign a deal with Woolworths.
