Dylan Bausch, 19, of Swanston Street, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to intentionally causing injury, making threats to inflict serious injury and affray.
Magistrate Franz Holzer said he gave Bausch a second chance in January but he "blew it big time".
He said the offending subjected members of the public to frightening behaviour and concerning unruliness.
A note written by Bausch and submitted to the court said the behaviour was out of character.
But Mr Holzer said that was a "bit of a stretch".
Mr Holzer cancelled that corrections order and sentenced Bausch to four months in jail.
He has already served 87 days in custody on remand.
On January 26, the victim was outside a property on Warrnambool's Henry Street when he found two red jerry cans stolen from his property.
He took the cans back to his home.
Then at 8pm he heard banging at the front door while having dinner with his wife and three kids.
Police said he observed 10 people standing outside.
A woman began yelling at the victim, who told the group of people they had stolen from him and that they should leave.
Bausch lunged at the victim and swung a metal bat at him. He used the bat to strike the victim, hitting him on the wrist and lower back.
Fearing for the safety of his wife and kids, the victim fled into his home and picked up a knife off the kitchen counter.
He chased the group away from his property but Bausch continued to walk towards the victim before throwing the bat at him. Fortunately it missed.
Police said the victim and his wife were badly shaken. The victim attended the Warrnambool Base hospital the following day with injuries.
Then on January 28, Bausch was walking along the Warrnambool rail trail when two cyclists road past.
He pointed a knife at them and they fled in fear.
Bausch was arrested and conveyed to Warrnambool police station. While in the cells he picked an eyelet off his pants and used it to scratch the words "I Dylan B" into the wall.
When approached by custody officers he said: "Shit happens, I'm going to jail anyway".
