Delivered by the producer-led project Livestock Health & Biosecurity VICTORIA, the information session will give producers a broad view of the role of biosecurity and disease monitoring throughout the supply chain.
The event will present information about the role in biosecurity and disease monitoring played by carcass feedback systems in Victorian abattoirs as well as from a produce perspective.
The approach taken by the Murrnong permaculture farm in northern Victoria will also be raised along with the role that biosecurity plays in making farm businesses profitable.
Veterinarian Dr Patrick Kluver will give a seasonal outlook to producing healthy and productive stock and the value of being a step ahead of endemic livestock diseases.
“The season has been patchy throughout Victoria and getting stock through winter is one of the real challenges,” said Dr Kluver.
“For producers in the south west, some of the key issues to look out for are related to energy, such as calcium and magnesium metabolism.
“Prevention, and early intervention when prevention has failed, is key,” Dr Kluver said.
Other topics will include preparing for a Livestock Production Assurance program audit and understanding what Q fever is and why it is on the rise.
The free event will be held at the Colac football club rooms from 9.30am on Wednesday, July 11 with lunch provided.
