​Brendan Farrell, 50 of Auty Street, unsuccessfully applied for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody until June 25.

He has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, recklessly causing injury, threatening to inflict serious injury and two counts of unlawful assault.

Magistrate Peter Mellas denied bail, saying that Mr Farrell was an unacceptable risk of committing further offences, had been charged with a number of serious offences and the evidence against him was relatively strong.

Warrnambool police Senior Constable Emily Durham said that at 6pm on May 29, Mr Farrell's partner was driving a car with other passengers and Farrell sitting behind her.

She said it was alleged Mr Farrell reached around the woman's throat with a phone charger cord and choked her until another man intervened.

Then in the early hours of June 14 it is alleged that another man received a call from Mr Farrell to attend an address in Warrnambool's Murray Street.

It's alleged Mr Farrell whipped the man with a washing machine hose after Mr Farrell alleged the man had slept with his partner.

Mr Farrell also produced a 15cm knife and tried to cut one of the man's ears off.

In a struggle, the victim suffered a deep wound to a thumb that has since required surgery.

Senior Constable Durham said Kevin Knowles, who is well known to police, intervened and stopped the incident. 

Mr Farrell was arrested after another incident last week.

Senior Constable Durham said that Mr Farrell was deemed unfit to be interview by officers because of his ongoing drug use.

She said that according to a Court Integrated Services Program report that he was using .1 grams of ice daily.

Mr Farrell  said the case against him was not strong and there had been few statements made to police by witnesses.

He said he was a carer for his 91-year-old mother, he could live with her and seek drug treatment and rehabilitation.
