The Magpie, who debuted alongside fellow Hampden league players Harris Jennings (Portland), Jed Henderson and Ben Annett (South Warrnambool), scored a third-quarter goal and finished as one of the Rebels’ best players in the tight one-point loss to Bendigo Pioneers at Mars Stadium on Saturday.
The Rebels held a 19-point lead at three-quarter time, before the Pioneers kicked four goals to one in the final term to steal victory.
Second-year player and Warrnambool export Matt Schnerring was also named as one of the Rebels’ best, while Hamilton’s Lochie Dawson kicked a second-quarter goal.
The Rebels now sit fifth after the first round, with a game against Geelong Falcons, which were defeated by the Dandenong Stingrays on Sunday.
