As the rural community works to rebuild its livelihood, city groups are hoping to co-ordinate offers of kindness in a strategic manner. 

Major Peter Wood from Warrnambool’s Salvation Army corp said while his team was grateful for kind offers, an organised appeal worked best for all concerned.

“We’ve already received a lot of donations,” he said.

“But moving forward we’d love a phone call first so we can efficiently place the donated goods.

“Also for people who need something we urge you to please ask. We’ve got inventories including caravans, washing machines and practical appliances that we’ll keep for the future when the need arises.

“And for those in the community wanting to give, please contribute cash or things in kind at our donation point in Lava Street,” he said.

Warrnambool Food Share chief Dedy Friebe said all donations of non-perishable food would be gratefully accepted.

“We’ll be there for the long haul,” he said. “Not just in the fire’s wake.

“We have over 100 agencies registered with us so I’d say we’ll be offering support to a number of families in need over the coming weeks.

“We’re happy to take donations to those in need.”
