Usually she would have gone out for dinner with her Irish husband Arthur, but the couple decided to stay at their property on Greens Lane, Hawkesdale.
Not long after 9.30pm on Saturday a blaze scorched their land and came terrifyingly close to burning down their home.
As they left their farm on Saturday evening, Mrs Mullan thought she wouldn’t be coming back to a house on Sunday.
She said it had been a “very frightening” experience.
The couple rushed to a friend’s home, while firefighters battled the ferocious fire.
They hadn’t realised there was fire activity until friends rang to alert them.
After the power went out at their house, Mr Mullan had gone outside to put the generator on.
The couple didn’t think much of the power outage as there had been an outage only a few weeks before.
“He (Arthur) went out and put it on and he never noticed anything,” she said.
“He just got back and we got into bed and the mobile phone went and we didn’t get it the first time, but we got it the second time. Our neighbours said that it was ‘all go’ down the back of our farm and it was moving rapidly.”
She praised the CFA’s quick efforts.
“I just can’t thank them enough,” she said.
“They have done a wonderful job. The conditions up here were absolutely horrendous.”
She said when they were leaving seven fire engines were lined up ready to tackle the fire.
“I thought we are leaving and those poor guys have got to stop and fight it,” she said.
“The wind was just swirling. There was three pockets, one down the back, one down the middle and one up the front of the property, all lit up.
“The wind would come and it would just go ‘whoosh’ and the flames would go up in the air again.”
All of the property’s livestock survived the fire, which came right up to the home.
“It is a miracle,” Mrs Mullan said.
“There’s also no damage to the house. Isn’t that amazing.
“The fire brigade and the people have been absolutely amazing.”
