Macarthur police officer Senior Constable David Rook said he had been told by one witness that after the accident the man continued driving and almost caused head-on collisions with other vehicles.
“He was veering onto the wrong side of the road and at one stage almost had a head-on crash with a truck,” he said.
“We would like to speak to any witnesses. Their were vehicles flashing their lights at the driver and numerous phone calls were made to police about the manner of his driving.”
Senior Constable Rook said the man’s driving behaviour was extremely dangerous.
“The potential for serious injury or a fatality was very high. It was very fortunate that no one was injured,” he said.
Wednesday: A man who crashed into the back of a school bus at Killarney then drove away with his airbags deployed is facing multiple charges after being stopped by police in Port Fairy this afternoon.
The Port Fairy man, aged 54, ran into the back of the stationary school bus carrying 12 students at 4.05pm.
Port Fairy police Sergeant Mick Wolfe said the man was driving a Nissan 4WD when he hit the bus, which was travelling west on the Princes Highway and had come to a stop to turn right into Koroit-Port Fairy Road.
Sergeant Wolfe said the collision caused “extensive damage” to the bonnet and front end of the car.
Witnesses to the accident called police, and after the collision the car was said to have continued driving along the Princes Highway to Port Fairy in an “irrational manner”.
Sergeant Wolfe said the man was stopped by police in Regent Street, Port Fairy, and police asked him to accompany them to the station to undertake an evidentiary breath test, which he refused to do.
Sergeant Wolfe said police believe the man had alcohol in his system and he would be charged for failing to accompany police, careless driving and other traffic offences.
No one involved in the crash was injured.
