A poll carried out by the Standard showed close to 75 per cent opposed the idea, which was raised during Moyne Shire’s January meeting after concerns over damage to Port Fairy’s cricket ovals.
The poll, asking ‘Do you think Moyne Shire should cull corellas?’ attracted 924 votes in total, with 687 voting no and 237 voting yes.
At the shire’s January meeting, Port Fairy Cricket Club’s Paul Sheehan outlined the damage being done to the ovals by up to 3000 birds and called for a solution that was “good for all of us and death for the corellas”.
Reader comments responding to the issue were varied.
Jan Oliver-Ramsay said she “absolutely” supported the cull.
“Our trees are being ripped to shreds and the noise, day and night … drives me insane!” she said.
“I am often up late as I work late, then get woken around 6am by these rowdy birds (in their hundreds), all waking in our large trees. The back yard is strewn with leaves and bits of branches from their destructive habits.”
However, Giorgio Palmeri responded by expressing his opposition to the cull.
“Your trees?” he said.
“These birds have inhabited “your trees” and this land well before you were even born.
“I have hundreds of corellas on "my trees" and I love them. If you do not want corellas maybe Melbourne CBD is an idea.”
