Andrew Ferguson, 24, of Saltau Street, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to two counts of thefts from shops.
He and a woman stole a $44 bottle of Kahlua from Dan Murphy's and a can of Wild Turkey from The Premix King.
The offending was caught on security camera footage.
Defence counsel Jack Rabl said Ferguson had a modest prior criminal history and no offences of dishonesty although he has a significant background of mental health issues.
"He has made some positive progress in the last three months, now has stable accommodation and that has seen a deescalation of his offending since mid 2016 when he was involved in serious crimes," he said.
Mr Rabl said because of the involvement of the State Trustees, his client had little money.
"He knows this is not the way to conduct himself," he said.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Ferguson was taking significant rehabilitation steps and complying with his medication but he needed to stay away from alcohol outlets.
She said if Ferguson continued his offending behaviour he would not be as fortunate in future.
