It was the fairytale romance, concocted on television, that was meant to salve the wounds of ghosts of heartbreak past.

But it's over.

Sophie Monk and Stu Laundy have announced their relationship is over after meeting just a few months ago on The Bachelorette.

In a statement posted to Instagram, Monk announced the demise of her romance with the millionaire hotel heir.

"I don't know how to explain this because it's an unusual circumstance to be in," the post read.

"But because I entered this relationship so publicly, I know I owe an answer to Australia about my personal life.

"I went into this experience looking to settle down and start a family.

"I gave it the best shot I could and my intentions were everything I said I was looking for, but unfortunately it just didn't work out.

"As much as I respect him, we are just very different people."

Monk and Landy's relationship was under the microscope from the moment it delicately unfolded before viewers' eyes on their television screens, but as soon as they emerged from the show accusations began that the relationship was a sham and the pair only remained together to fulfil the obligations of a Network Ten contract.

But Monk attempted to quell the inevitable tide of rumours relating to a contract expiration in her statement.

"There were no contracts or pressure to stay together whatsoever from anyone and we remain friends," she said.

"The positive in this whole experience is it taught me to jump out of my comfort zone in order to find real love and made me much stronger.

"I sincerely want to apologise to anyone who invested so much love and support and I hope I haven't disappointed anyone."

While the relationship may not have worked out for Monk it has given her a much needed career boost.

Despite the fling with Landy only lasting three months, Australia's affection for her helped her land a gig over on the Nine Network where she will be part of yet another dating show, this time as the host of Love Island.
