Bookmakers bet $151 about One For Later’s hopes of winning the 2000 metre race that was restricted to mares.
Peterson,65, was a successful local jockey riding a handful of winners at Flemington and was excited to train his first winner at the famous course.
“It’s a great thrill to train a winner at Flemington,” he said.
“I rode a couple here during my riding career. I thought One For Later may run third or fourth but to win is amazing.
“She ran well in the Penshurst Cup when she ran third on Boxing Day and followed that up with a second placing at Warrnambool.
“She’s a tough staying mare. We freshened her up following her Warrnambool run last month to have her ready for this race but her goal was a 3000 race at the Valley on February 2.”
One For Later is destined for a career over jumps this winter and Peterson is confident she will measure up to the task.
“She won a hurdle race at Coleraine in September last year,” Peterson said.
“She handles all types of going, can stay and jumps well so she looks to have a bright career in front of her as a jumper.”
The win gave One For Later her sixth victory from 55 starts and took her stake earnings to more than $160,000.
