Nigel Stevenson, 36, previously of Willunga Street, Portland, pleaded guilty in the Portland Magistrates Court this week to seven offences including theft, obtaining property be deception, failing to answer bail and assaulting an emergency worker on duty.
He was jailed for two months with 42 days counted as already served.
Police said that at 10.50pm on September 1 last year an on-duty Melbourne police officer dropped and lost his wallet.
Stevenson picked up the wallet, took a train into the city and bought a bottle of Bundaberg rum and four cans of Wild Turkey bourbon in Russell Street valued at $67.
In Bourke Street he bought two cans of Pepsi and cigarettes worth $46, then made two $50 transactions before getting phone credit valued at $146.
Stevenson was caught on security camera footage, identified and later arrested.
The police officer's wallet was located and handed in to police.
Early last year Stevenson pleaded guilty in Warrnambool court to 15 charges involving thefts, burglary and theft of alcohol from shops dating back to 2007 and was jailed for 10 months.
On release from prison he was to be extradited to Queensland where he owes 18 months' imprisonment on parole after previously being jailed there on burglary and theft charges.
At the time magistrate Cynthia Toose said Stevenson’s raging alcohol and drug issues drove his offending.
She said he had hit soft targets like schools, a medical practice, his aunt's home and a private home, which were proven to have long-term negative impacts on residents.
Stevenson has more than 30 pages of prior convictions and Ms Toose said she understood that he had become institutionalised and was now probably more comfortable in prison than the community.
