The 75-year-old was travelling on Callaghans Road when the accident happened about 11.45am.
“He was thrown off his four-wheel motorbike and he is in intensive care in The Alfred hospital,” a family spokesperson told The Standard.
The air ambulance landed on a nearby farm and flew Mr Couch to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne where on Monday he was in a critical but stable condition.
For more than 20 years Mr Couch served as a Moyne Shire councillor from 1996 until 2008.
He also served three one-year terms as mayor between 1999 and 2002.
He first joined local government in 1988 when he was elected to the former Warrnambool Shire and served for six years until council amalgamations.
Moyne Shire yesterday released a statement saying it was sorry to hear of Mr Couch’s accident and wished him a speedy recovery.
