Allansford’s Ben Boyd, Russells Creek’s Cam Williams and Brierly-Christ Church’s Nathan Murphy have been included in a 14-strong Victoria Country squad for the Australian Country Cricket Championships in Geraldton from January 3 to 14.
Boyd, a fourth-year Vic Country representative, has been handed the captaincy for the second consecutive campaign.
Williams, a wicketkeeper-batsman and captain at Russells Creek, described his selection as an “honour” after years honing his craft in both Warrnambool and Melbourne.
“You want to play the highest standard possible every time you play, and this is just fantastic,” Williams said.
“I wouldn’t be able to do things like this without the support of my partner, because I’ve got a young family and things like this take a big time commitment.
“I’m really thankful for the opportunity.”
Williams’ efforts on the big stage haven’t gone unnoticed.
The former Nestles skipper averaged 61.8 runs an innings at Melbourne Country Week in February, the highest in the Warrnambool outfit.
Boyd welcomed the selectors’ decision to include both Williams and Murphy in the squad.
“I’m quite excited by the concept and to have more Warrnambool boys around. We’re always very proud,” he said.
“It’ll be good to have Cam and Nathan in there. We’ve played lots of country weeks together, so to play country championships will be great.”
