Port Fairy police Senior Constable Glenn McDuff said police had received a number of calls about the seal.
"A lot of people have been ringing police in relation to a small seal that appears to be injured," he said.
"The seal has taken up residency at Martin Port. It suns itself during the day and has a bit of a swim around during the evening.
"Wildlife officers are aware of the seal and his condition. They have advised people to stay clear and let nature take its course.
"Through observation the seal appears to be recovering well," Senior Constable McDuff said.
The wildlife.vic.gov.au website explains that no one should approach within 30 metres of a seal on land even if the person is in the water, dogs are not permitted within 50 metres and it is illegal to touch or feed a seal.
