He's one of three Canberra hopes for the Australian Cyclist of the Year award - the Sir Hubert "Oppy" Opperman Medal and Trophy - along with world champion Caroline Buchanan and Chloe Hosking.

Matthews should win the elite men's road cyclist of the year having also claimed a bronze medal at the world championships on top of his Tour green jersey.

He also won two stages at the Tour, along with a world title in the team time trial for Team Sunweb.

Buchanan's nominated for two gongs outside the Oppy - the women's BMX rider of the year and the women's mountain bike rider of the year as well.

She won a gold medal at the mountain bike worlds in the 4X, while also picked up a silver at the BMX world championships.

Hosking has been nominated for the elite women's road cyclist award, but is up against worlds silver medallist Katrin Garfoot.

Canberrans have a strong track record in the Oppy, with Mathew Hayman the reigning champion following his Paris-Roubaix win in 2016, Buchanan having won it in 2013 and three-time world champ Michael Rogers claiming it in 2003.

The Oppy is decided from the winners of all the elite categories, including Para-cycling, BMX and mountain bike.
