COBDEN AFL export Jackson Merrett has signalled his desire to get back to his best footy after inking a new deal with Essendon this week.

The 24-year-old has signed a one-year contract extension with the Bombers after a frustrating 2017.

He made 14 appearances for the club’s VFL side, but could not add to his 54 AFL games tally. He was dealt a massive blow in July when he broke his leg during a state league match against Collingwood.

“I am very pleased to sign on with Essendon again for the upcoming season,” Merrett told essendonfc.com.au.

“Last year was a frustrating season, not playing many games due to injury.

“I’m looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season and giving myself the best opportunity for senior football.”

Merrett, whose younger brother Zach was named vice-captain with Cale Hooker for the 2017 season, was drafted to Essendon with pick 31 in the 2011 national draft and made his debut in 2012.
