Instead, the man known as "Bling" will look to shine on different stages in 2018 and chase a complete set of points jerseys from the other grand tours instead.

Having won the green jersey for the sprinter's points competition at this year's Tour, the 27-year-old Canberran said he might target the same jersey at the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana instead so he could finish his career with all three on his resume.

Matthews' tenacity helped him become the first Canberran to win the green jersey at the world's most famous race.

While the Tour's circuit was released on Wednesday, Matthews said winning the same race again didn't interest him and he wanted to chase fresh goals instead.

It meant a showdown with three-time world champion and five-time green jersey winner Peter Sagan at the 2018 Tour might not be on the cards.

"The plan is for the team to set some different goals because to win the green again is not really a goal now that I've already done it," Matthews told Fairfax Media.

"Doing it again doesn't really interest me too much, but maybe try and go for a points jersey in one of the other grand tours - whether it's the Giro or the Vuelta - to maybe in my career try and win each of the sprint jerseys in each of the grand tours.

"I'm not really the type of rider that wants to win something more than once. For any rider the career is quite short and I'd rather try and win different races rather than the same race.

"In the end what do you get out of winning the same race more than once?"

Matthews might also have a year off from the world championships, despite finishing third this year, with the road race expected to favour climbers in the Austrian Alps.

While the worlds remains a target, he's looking to have a lower-key 2018.

"I'll always be wanting to win until I get it, but I think next year - I haven't actually seen the course yet, but from what you see on the graphs put out a few weeks ago it looks really for the climbers ... so maybe that will be too much [for me]," Matthews said.

"Maybe next year I'll have a year off from doing worlds, unless they want me to go there and help. But maybe take some pressure off myself for the end of the year and try and set some goals towards the end of the year without knowing I still have to back up for the worlds."

After a long year, he only had time for a whirlwind, five-day visit to Canberra on his way to China for the Tour of Guangxi.

That will be the Team Sunweb rider's last race of the year and when he crosses the finish line on the sixth-and-final stage on Tuesday he'll let himself reflect on the magnitude of his Tour de France triumph.

Part of that will be admiring the Ducati 959 Panigale green jersey edition the Canberra Motorcycle Centre made for him.

While he only sent a few days back in the ACT, Matthews got a lot more attention than he expected.

"I had a lot of people even driving past me in the car beeping and saying hello, which is not really normal. It's a bit surreal for me that people here actually notice who I am," Matthews said.

"In Europe I understand because we race every weekend and people see us every week so it's more common to see riders. But here for the public to notice it's quite nice.

"It's nice to see that cycling in Australia has really gone up another level in support. Even the Tour was pretty crazy with Aussies there."
