Troy Sexton, 38, of Russell Street, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to unlawful assault.
He is currently serving a two-month jail term and the new imprisonment will be on top of that sentence.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said prior convictions indicated Sexton had issues with alcohol and violence.
She said when Sexton's former partner went to check on him he pushed her, threatened her and at another time abused her.
"It's very ordinary behaviour," she said.
"A strong message needs to be sent to you and other people in the community. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated," she said.
