Mark Wilson, also known as Davis, 58, of Kent Road, Hamilton, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to assault-related offences and has already served 34 days in custody.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said photos of the woman's injuries were horrible and showed extensive bruising to the woman's face.
She asked what could be more frightening than to awake to find someone choking you to death.
The magistrate said the 88 days Wilson had spent in custody was the "tip of the ice berg" in terms of the sentence she would impose.
The case was adjourned for sentencing until this Friday.
Police said that Wilson had previously been the subject of 11 reports to police involving six different women.
Wilson and a woman had been in a relationship for six months and she bought a property about 25 kilometres out of Hamilton.
On February 27 Wilson had been drinking alcohol during the day and night and a verbal argument between him and the woman turned physical.
He grabbed the woman by both arms and put them behind her back which caused bruising.
He pushed the woman to the ground and to the back, she locked him out of her home and he kicked in the back door.
In a second incident the following day, Wilson had again been drinking when he grabbed the woman by the throat.
She left the property, flagged down police and made a statement to officers about the assaults.
The woman said she was scared and concerned that Wilson's behaviour was getting worse.
When interviewed, Wilson made no admissions, saying bruises were caused when the woman fell off a loading ramp of a removal truck two or three times and she broke the door by slamming it hard.
On May 8 the woman let Wilson stay at her home but awoke the next morning to find he was choking her.
He repeatedly asked who she was in a relationship with but the victim passed out.
Wilson then put him knees on the woman's shoulders to pin her down and repeatedly punched her to the face and head which caused headaches for weeks.
When interviewed, Wilson said the woman had been assaulted by her current girlfriend.
Defence counsel Jessica Tinetti said he client admitted significant prior court appearances and added that Wilson was a chronic abuser of alcohol but his mental health condition was unclear.
A reported handed to the magistrate indicated Wilson may suffer from an intensive explosion disorder.
