The Hayes-trained Formality hung on to defeat Jukebox by a long neck in the group three race, with Lone Eagle in third place.
Purcell said the wide barrier never helped Jukebox’s hopes in the 1200-metre race.
“From the wide gate Jukebox never got any cover,” he said.
“He raced a bit keen and that was probably because he had a month between runs.
“I’m sure he will be improved by the Blue Sapphire run. The performance should really top him off for the Coolmore Stud Stakes.”
Villermont trained by Purcell ran fifth and could have been hampered by the track conditions in a $120,000 restricted race behind Temple Of Bel.
Lite’N In My Veins, a new acquisition to Purcell’s Caulfield stable appeared to be unlucky when he was unplaced in a $120,000 event.
Purcell’s veteran stayer Swacadelic ran fifth in a 2400-metre race. The seven-year-old may now be aimed at the $150,000 Sandown Cup on November 18.
