This was the message to south-west residents when the Country Fire Authority (CFA) launched Fire Action Week in Warrnambool on Tuesday morning.

During a two-hour information session held at the CFA office in Warrnambool, Community Education Coordinator Mandy Maglaras said now was the time to prepare for an ‘above normal’ fire season.

“With recent localised rain the grass fuel loads are expected to be heavier leading into the summer months,” she said. “An early start to the fire season is also predicted in some parts of Victoria.”

Ms Maglaras said this week was a great time for residents to increase their understanding of fire risks where they live, to prepare their property and talk to their household about what they’ll do to stay safe from fire.

“Make sure you have a plan,” she said. “And make sure your family knows it, and stick to it.”

Ms Maglaras said decision-making was easier now than during an emergency situation.

“Taking steps to get prepared before the fire season means you know what to do when you’re at risk of fire,” she said. “It’s important to prepare your property for fire, but you also need to plan and prepare for your safety.

“Pack important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you can leave easily before a fire starts.”

The speed at which a fire can travel is a factor residents needed to be aware of.

“Grassfires can move at speeds of up to 25 km/h and jump highways,” she said. “Be aware of grassfires when you’re travelling. All fires are dangerous.”

This week’s higher temperatures had meant starting the fire ready conversation had been a little easier than in earlier months.

“Thankfully it’s warmed up this week and speaking of high temperatures seems easier to imagine,” Ms Maglaras said.

The new year is the time when Victoria is most at risk.

“Traditionally, Victoria’s worst period for fire is in January and February,” Ms Maglaras said. “But now is the time to prepare your property and get a plan for your family and your pets.”
