Later this month, Wannon Water is allowing public access to two of the city’s five water towers to celebrate National Water Week.
Wannon Water communications and branch manager Garrath Darkin said tours of the two towers would allow people to learn more about how the structures provided water to Warrnambool.
“Participants will also have the opportunity to climb an internal staircase to a viewing platform at the top of each tower,” Mr Darkin said.
“From here they can enjoy panoramic views across the city, countryside and ocean as far away as Lady Julia Percy Island.”
A tower in east Warrnambool will be open on Sunday October 15 from 10am to noon, while a west Warrnambool tower will be open on the same day from 1pm to 3pm.
Groups of up to 10 people will be taken on tours in 20-minute blocks, with bookings required.
Wannon Water special projects consultant Gary McLay said Warrnambool’s water towers were all at the same level.
He said the towers provided continuity of supply to deliver water to different parts of Warrnambool.
The two towers opening to the public are identical, and were constructed by local contractors between 1972 and 1973.
The sandstone Liebig Street water tower was built in 1893 making it one of Warrnambool’s iconic historic features.
There are 13 water towers or elevated tanks across the south-west managed by Wannon Water.
