The school’s year six leaders devised the ‘dis project’ after attending the Student Leaders Congress in March.
The young leaders are working to improve gratitude, mindfulness and empathy within their school and community.
A gratitude tree encourages students to think about what they’re grateful for and notice the positives in their lives, while regular mindfulness activities encourage them to be present and to calm their bodies and minds.
The students are also working with the local CWA branch to learn new skills and help to make a blanket for those less fortunate.
Teacher Sarah Daly said the daily mindfulness session had made a difference to students’ readiness to learn.
The leaders hope the project will be sustainable and have a long-lasting impact. Projects will be showcased at a congress celebration night at Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre on Wednesday.
