The brick home suffered extensive damage on Monday night and if it has to be replaced the damage bill could be about $250,000.
Detective Senior Constable Jarrod Anderson, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said the cause of the blaze was unknown and an arson chemist would examine the remains of the home on Tuesday.
He said patrolling Portland police uniform members raised the alarm about 8.30pm on Monday night.
The Portland fire brigade was notified and it took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
"It has been extensively damaged and my initial assessment would be that it may well have to be demolished and replaced," he said.
"We are requesting that anyone who saw anything in that area to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” he said.
