Born and educated in Warrnambool, Dr Isabella Younger Ross established the Baby Health Centre Movement in 1917.
This body was formed after Dr Younger Ross and a small group of women decided to make a stand against the apathy attached to the loss of infant life in Victoria. At the time, one in every 10 babies born in Melbourne was dying before their first birthday.
The movement quickly attracted plenty of support and became an invaluable tool for young families to access to monitor the health of their babies. It has since evolved into the Maternal and Child Health Centre which has branches across the state. The centenary celebrations will be held at the Collingwood Town Hall on Friday.
Dr Younger Ross was the daughter of John and Henrietta Younger. The family was well known for its Warrnambool department store Youngers, in Liebig Street.
