NBL-listed guard Nathan Sobey will suit up for Utah Jazz in the July competition after trialling with four American franchises.
His former Warrnambool Seahawks coach Matt Alexander, who teamed with Sobey to win a Big V title less than 12 months ago, said it was a remarkable achievement for a player from regional Australia.
“It’s very encouraging news. Having three out of the four teams he tried out with wanting him to play in the summer league is a positive sign,” Alexander said.
“His attitude is really good. When I saw him before he left, he was so relaxed.
“Three days before he left he was out gardening with his brother, doing some landscaping with a shovel.
“He’s is a pretty humble sort of guy. He is very grounded.
“He doesn’t seem to be overwhelmed with any situation. This is just another great opportunity to show how good he is.”
Sobey will have strong ties at Utah with his Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright and teammate Mitch Creek also aligned to the Jazz.
Creek, who posted a photo of the pair on his Instagram account (pictured inset), is another country Victoria talent out of Horsham.
Utah’s main roster also has links to Australia through former top-five draft pick Dante Exum and Boomer Joe Ingles.
Alexander believes having Wright onboard will help Sobey settle in and play his high-octane game style on the summer league stage.
“Joey knows how to use him correctly. He will give him enough space he can really show his talents,” he said.
Sobey – the reigning NBL most improved player – said he was rapt to get an opportunity to show his wares.
“I’m happy with the outcome (of the workouts) that they wanted to invite me to summer league,” Sobey told NBL Media.
“That was the short-term goal, so I’ll just keep working and try to get to the next stage.”
The NBA summer league will be played in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
Utah will play its first game on July 3.
