AFL Western District league sides Warrnambool and South Warrnambool will play a curtain-raiser before the Hampden league senior match between the two arch rivals at Reid Oval on Saturday.

Roosters youth girls coach Alicia Drew said the Hampden league-driven initiative was a positive.

“It is a sensational opportunity. I was pretty stoked when the league offered the spot and it all came through,” she said.

“You want to get the most coverage you can, so it’s pretty good from that point of view, that’s for sure.

“I don’t think the girls have paid too much attention to it, I think they’re just wanting to play football.

“It will be interesting to see how they go with so many people around.”

Warrnambool coach Dean Kilpatrick said the Blues were rapt to be involved.

“I think they are really excited and a little bit intimidated by it, a little scared by the exposure it’s going to get,” he said.

“I think in the end they’ll get out there and just have fun and enjoy it.

“They’ll forget about the crowd. They’ll forget it once they’re out there.”

Kilpatrick said the inaugural AFL Western District-Wimmera Mallee girls football season had been a hit. The Blues-Roosters clash is the final home and away fixture of the campaign.

“This season has been fantastic for girls football,” he said.

“I just get people coming up every training night saying ‘can I come and train, can I come and train’.

“With this exposure again, hopefully we can get a couple more teams from the district and have a bigger season next year.”

Warrnambool captain Lucy Moloney said the curtain-raiser was an opportunity to show their skills to a wider audience.

“It’s really good for girls footy because people get to see what we’ve been doing over the past couple of weeks and how much we’ve improved,” she said.
