Commissioner Allen, who was in Warrnambool as part of the LGBTI Equality Roadshow on Monday, was responding to Court’s comments regarding her opposition to same-sex marriage.
“It is the sad the way she (Court) has been attacked about her comments,” commissioner Allen said.
“She’s entitled to her opinion, I don’t agree with it, but it is my job to change it and not try and drag her down.”
The commissioner said Court is homophobic, which is a fear that only education can overcome.
“What this roadshow is about is local rural stories that can change hearts and minds,” the commissioner said. “It’s not good to lash hate at her. It is only a small portion of the community which is doing that.”
The roadshow included sessions with community stakeholders and will continue on Tuesday morning before heading to Portland.
