Moyne Shire has heeded community feedback about the need for an extra post-Christmas kerbside recycling pick-up and will introduce the service this year.
The matter was brought to a councillor’s attention this year by a Port Fairy-based accommodation provider. The business owners then posted their suggestion for the extra Christmas pick-up on a local Facebook group.
According to a report to council, the business’ Facebook post drew strong support from the community and other Port Fairy-based accommodation providers.
“The community chatter about this proposal has been ‘Port Fairy-centric’ with minimal commentary from residents of other communities (but) it is nonetheless important to consider the proposal in the context of communities beyond Port Fairy,” the report to council stated.
Councillors unanimously voted in favour of providing “an additional recycling collection … on the week of the first (green waste) collection after Christmas each year”.
The extra recycling pick-up, which will cost the council $20,000, will be implemented in the areas covered by the shire’s kerbside collection service.
Cr Jill Parker said the additional service was a great initiative and showed Moyne Shire being responsive to its community.
Cr Jordan Lockett agreed, saying there was a real need for an extra recycling service during the Christmas period “when more frothies are consumed”.
However Cr Ian Smith said the council should look at also assisting residents outside the kerbside collection area where they “also enjoy a few more frothies”, suggesting a “free tip day”.
