This single wreath will remain in pride of place until Monday, when it will be joined by other smaller ones to remember family and friends who have died from suicide and survivors.
Monday is National White Wreath Day, a White Wreath Association event, is held annually on May 29.
Warrnambool co-ordinator Lynny Mast said Monday will mark the fifth time it’s been held in Warrnambool.
“This is not about statistics,” Mrs Mast said. “It’s not about getting political. It’s about all the people who have lost someone or have been suicidal themselves to come down and realise they’re not alone.”
Mrs Mast said the wreaths created public awareness and were an opportunity for family and friends to grieve. “This is a day people can feel safe, to reflect and remember.”
Wreaths are laid on the Civic Green from noon until 5pm and families are invited to bring their own or decorate a wreath themselves. Poems, photos or other mementoes can also be laid. Cards are available to be written on and can be laminated there.
Donations to Lifeline and the White Wreath Association will also be taken on the day. For more information contact Lynny on 0417 169 073.
