Detective Senior Constable Craig Wastell, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said a Colac man received a stab wound to the back while near Raglan Parade between Laverock Road and Morriss Road.
Detective Senior Constable Wastell said it was believed the attacker was known to the victim and that it was not a random attack.
The incident occurred between 5am and 6am.
He said the victim went to an acquaintance’s house near Laverock Road after being stabbed, where a woman called an ambulance.
The police were then notified and the victim was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery. The victim – a 29-year-old Colac man – is now in the acute care ward and expected to remain there for at least another 24 hours.
Detective Senior Constable Wastell said police executed a warrant at a Warrnambool residence on Tuesday in connection to the stabbing, but are still seeking more information.
Police are planning to speak to the victim further but are interested to hear from members of the public who may have seen something or who have information about the stabbing.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
