The Warrnambool school is hosting 31 students from its sister school in Kyoto from years three to six until Monday.
Community engagement officer Catherine Lee said students from the school had visited Warrnambool three times previously and students had developed relationships with each other.
“It’s a chance for them to use the language skills they’ve learnt already and learn from these children,” Mrs Lee said.
A group of St Joseph’s students will head to Japan in September to visit the Doshisha Elementary School students.
Year six student Kate Sheedy, 11, and her family are hosting two girls and she said she was enjoying having them stay.
“I’ve learnt a lot more Japanese words and how to talk to them,” she said.
School chaplain Yoshi Nakagawa said while the Japanese students’ English was very limited, the trip would inspire them to improve their language skills.
Kyosuke Fujita’s favourite part of the trip was eating Australian food, especially barbecue fare.
