Her husband Tim, however, slept through and didn’t know what had happened until Mrs Brown woke him, gripped with fear.
“Everything started to move, the walls were shaking and the floor was shaking,” Mrs Brown said.
“I was terrified.”
The couple’s children Zachary, 9, and Grace, 6, were playing in their room.
“They thought it was funny,” Mrs Brown said.
When the tremor subsided, Mrs Brown quickly searched for news reports about the incident, fearful it may be followed by a tsunami.
After a few agonising minutes, she found a report confirming a 5.5 magnitude earthquake had struck two kilometres north-east of Banjar Pasekan.
Mrs Brown said during the earthquake if felt like there was an “enormous truck going past”. She said she initially wanted to get on a plane and head home and remained “a little bit nervous”.
